Hospice and home health are similar but ultimately very different services. However, many people wonder if both services can be received at the same time. The short answer is that hospice and home health are not meant to be received at the same time. The reason behind this is because of the different philosophies associated with these two different services. I’d like to go into this in more detail, and after I do, I will also explain why this answer is not always so black and white.
This answer is not always black and white.
When someone is admitted to home health services, the ultimate goal the patient and provider have in mind is that the patient will recover and hopefully regain some level of independence. But when a patient is admitted to hospice services, the goal now becomes that the patient will be made comfortable and at ease as they transition past this life. Because of the differing philosophies, it is pretty clear to see why hospice and home health are not meant to be provided at the same time.
There are exceptions to this rule.
With that being said, I would not be educating properly if I didn’t mention that there are exceptions to this rule. There can be special circumstances where an agency may be able to make the claim that a patient can accept parts of both benefits at the same time. In our experience, those types of situations are not common and that is why I suggest speaking to one of our expert care coordinators who can work out those details for you.
